This area of Tokyo's 23 wards, comprising the Chuo, Koto, Minato and Shinagawa wards, is known as the Gulf Coast Area. The area, which began to be landfilled in the Edo period (1603-1867) for residential and household waste disposal, has grown remarkably in recent years and become one of Tokyo's most famous landscapes, lined with tall buildings and high-rise condominiums. The area is not only popular as a tourist destination, including Odaiba, but is also becoming increasingly popular as a place to live, as it offers a unique waterfront resort atmosphere overlooking Tokyo bay and is close to the city centre with convenient transport links.
Tsukishima, Kachidoki and Harumi areas (Chuo Ward)
The Tsukishima, Kachidoki and Harumi areas are arguably the face of the bay area. While tall buildings and condominiums give the area a modern impression, there are also historic shopping streets such as Tsukishima Monja Street, famous for Tsukishima monja(dish of pan-fried batter with various fillings), where you can also enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional downtown. The area is also evolving on a daily basis, with the athletes' village for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games being supplied as condominiums.

The area is also home to the Takeshiba Passenger Boat Terminal, which provides access to the widely popular Izu and Ogasawara Islands, making it the gateway to the archipelago area.
