Investigating the Effects of OLED Lighting on Sleep Induction and Fatigue Reduction

On the 24th, Haseko Corporation announced that, in collaboration with Kaneka Corporation, they will investigate the effects of residential lighting environments on sleep induction and fatigue reduction for residents.

The study will be conducted in a living experimental unit within the rental apartment complex "Sustainabranché Hon-Gyotoku" (36 units total), located a 6-minute walk from Myoden Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture.

Kaneka's OLED lighting, which is believed to inhibit the secretion of melatonin (a hormone that enhances sleep quality) less than other types of lighting, will be installed in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. The study will measure melatonin levels and brain waves during sleep to verify the effectiveness of the lighting in promoting good sleep and reducing fatigue through relaxation.

Additionally, due to the diffuse light of the OLED lighting, which reduces shadows and enhances visibility, it will also be installed in the coworking spaces of common areas to evaluate its impact on work efficiency.

Based on the results of this study, the company will consider introducing this lighting into the condominiums and detached houses developed by its group.
