This area, comprising four of Tokyo's 23 wards - Setagaya, Meguro, Shinagawa and Ota - is known as the 'Jonan (castle south)Area' because it is located to the south of the former Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace). The area, which was lined with the residences of feudal lords during the Edo period and has been home to famous wealthy families and business people since the Meiji era, has established itself as a high-class residential area and is popular as a comfortable place to live due to its convenient transport links.
Setagaya Ward
Setagaya Ward boasts the largest population of any of Tokyo's 23 wards. Setagaya Ward is home to many sophisticated residential areas, including the prestigious Seijo, a high-class residential area. Setagaya Ward is a very popular ward, with local terms such as 'Seijo madam'. The ward has a good living environment, and because of its convenient access to the city center, there is a large influx of people from other areas, and land prices are said to be relatively stable.
Meguro Ward
Meguro Ward is well-known for its brand-name areas such as Nakameguro, which is popular for its cherry blossoms, Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka. As well as being popular as a fashionable shopping spot, areas such as Aobadai, Yakumo and Komaba are also popular as coveted luxury residential areas. Furthermore, the area is also characterised by its many historical sites, such as the former Maeda family's(A Japanese clan that was a warrior and noble family) main residence and historic slopes, which allow residents to enjoy the good old townscape.
Shinagawa Ward
Shinagawa Ward has seen remarkable development through redevelopment in the bay area, including Osaki. While high-rise condominiums and office buildings line the streets, there are also many traditional shopping streets such as Togoshi Ginza, Hatanodai and Musashikoyama, which still have a rich local atmosphere. The area known as 'Jonan Gozan(castle south five peaks)' has long been popular as a high-class residential area among those in the know.
Ota Ward
Ota Ward is home to Haneda Airport, the gateway to the skies, and has a diverse range of neighbourhoods, including premium residential areas such as Denenchofu and Sanno, and the Keihin Industrial Zone, which plays a key role in Japan's manufacturing industry. The area is popular with families due to its convenient transport links by train, car and plane, as well as the many parks and greenery in the area.
